KONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY HOSTS RARE TOUR OF MCCANDLESS RANCH, HOME OF THE `ALALĀ
Kona Historical Society is pleased to announce that reservations are now being taken for a tour through privately owned McCandless Land and Cattle Company, on the slopes of Mauna Loa on Saturday, October 21, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, the next experience in the award-winning Jeep Trip Program.
This historic tour begins at Ranch headquarters in south Kona and meanders by van, courtesy of Hawaii Forest and Trail, through Kona’s most pristine and intact native forest, rich with endemic flora and fauna. The drive through what was once home to the `alalā, or Hawaiian crow, proceeds to the 4500′ elevation to the aviary where these native birds were studied extensively. The tour will give guests insight into the research about the `alalā, as they enjoy a historical talk and a deli lunch with refreshments, generously provided by Hawaii Forest and Trail, at the family cabin located at the 5800′ level.
McCandless Ranch is located in the South Kona Forest Legacy Area, between 4,000 and 7,000 feet elevation, on the southwest slope of Mauna Loa. The property is dominated by a mixed canopy of large native `ōhi`a, koa, and sandalwood. Recent bird surveys show that it is home to five endangered birds including the `alalā, which is found nowhere else in the world. Recent plant surveys identified 17 rare endemic plant species.
Reservations are $170 and must be made before Monday, October 16. Any interested party can enjoy this excursion by becoming a member of Kona Historical Society. Membership with KHS is unrestricted. Joining is easy! Just visit store.konahistorical.org to become a member and reserve your spot. Give us a call if you have any questions or would like to sign up by phone: 808-323-3222. A deli lunch and refreshments will be provided but be sure to bring extra water, walking shoes and sun protection.
